Have you ever wondered why property dealers mention the term “Vastu compliant” when they put an advertisement for sale of a property? Vastu compliant means building the property on the ancient Hindu technique of architecture and which expresses the “science of architecture”.

The birth of this form of construction dates back to around 6000 B.C, and the methodology was meant to channelize the relationship between man and nature. This form of architecture lays down certain regulations for the construction of a property, the following of which can lead to a congenial environment and healthy residents.

India proudly possesses the scriptures that define the layout, ground preparation, design, measurements, space organization and spatial geometry, which can construct a Vastu compliant property. The Vastu principles can be applied to different types of property be it a house, office, school or even a city.

The core of Vastu Shastra

The foundation of Vastu Shastra is believed to be based on the five basic components present in the atmosphere – viz. air, water, fire, space, and earth. These five components are also termed as the ‘Panchabhootas’ (five elements). The world is composed of these five elements and they define the manner in which specified directions interact with specified objects or people. Moreover, the texts suggest that the five components of nature are required to synchronize with the five elements of the human body to lead a happy life and maintain harmonious relations with others.

Along with the five components, Vastu Shastra stresses on the significance of directions. When building a property, it is vital to add each area of the property in a specific direction. The significance of the eight directions (i.e., east, west, north, south, north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west) along with skywards (i.e., aakash) and downwards (i.e. paataal) is mentioned in the scriptures. For instance, east symbolizes the rising of the Sun and denotes prosperity. Accordingly, the entry door of a house, study, living room, worship area, etc. can be placed in these directions to invite good luck.

Vastu Shastra also provides for certains do’s and don’t’s while constructing a property. For instance, the main door of the property should not be in the south-west direction as this direction is believed to be the entry for evil energies. It also guides us on the placement of certain objects or the kinds of materials to be used during construction. As an example, mirrors should not be placed facing the main door of the property as they reflect away the positive energy that may be entering the property.

The advantage of using Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra is not a hidden solution to avoid pain and suffering. Rather, it is a means that can provide solace and repose in troubled times. Vastu Shastra aids the distressed person in attaining rhythmic inner solace in spite of the troubles that one is already facing.

A property built in collaboration with Vastu architecture, helps the individual attain physical, spiritual and emotional equity. The physical support is achieved by means of better comfortability and convenience, which is attained by good ventilation, proper usage of space, relaxed outlook and proper air ventilation. The spiritual enlightenment makes the individual realize the realities of life. It also leads to a logical and creative bent of mind. An individual takes better decisions with mental stability and remains energized throughout the day. The Vastu Shastra psychologically works towards the welfare of the residents and occupiers of the property. It releases tension and helps build a harmonious relation between members of the family.

Moreover, a property built on the principles of Vastu Shastra is painless to utilize, as it allows maximum positivity to sweep in. The usage of Vastu Shastra also helps the property owner to attain optimum utilization of space. The architectural finesse of the property makes it attain maximum benefits of nature and the components present in the atmosphere. A property filled with positive energy enhances the personality of the residents / occupiers and improves the individual’s relation with their inner self and the outside world.

Since Vastu Shastra stimulates the five elements present in nature, it leads to a clean and clutter-free environment that improves mental stability and skill leading to a healthy body and mind.
